Mamoun Behairy Centre Launches an Initiative for Economic Dialogue for Peace and Sustainable Development During the Transitional Period

The first year of the transitional period witnessed the widening of the rift between the transitional government and its local political incubator represented by the Forces of Freedom and Change (FFC) and the Resistance Committees (RCs) triggered by the disagreement over the 2020 budget, especially the budget’s lifting of subsidies from basic commodities. In an effort to mitigate this disagreement between the government and its political incubator, Mamoun Behairy Centre (MBC) suggested an initiative to the British Council to support a dialogue between the two parties over the economic policies during the transitional period. The British Council (BC) agreed to support the initiative under the sponsorship of the Department for International (DFID), without interfering in its protocols or conclusions to ensure complete national ownership.
The initiative includes five phases as follows:
• Phase One – Mitigating the Differences Over Economic Policies.
• Phase Two – Towards Reaching a Common Position on Pro-Peace Economic Policies at the Economic Conference.
• Phase Three – Towards Agreeable Pro-Peace Economic Policies Beyond the Economic Conference (2021 Budget).
• Phase Four – Towards Agreeable Economic Policies in the Preparation for the General Elections (2022 Budget).
• Phase Five – Towards Agreeable Economic Strategies During the Democratic Rule Towards the Realization of Sustainable Development.

The first phase of the dialogue has been successfully completed. Preparations are under way to complete the remaining stages aimed at achieving the desired consensus on economic policies during the transitional period and beyond.
Mamoun Behairy Centre will publish the results of all stages of the dialogue on its website to avail the opportunity for all interested parties to actively participate in this national dialogue.
